Customer Success Story : Cutz

Who is Cutz?

Cutz, a Saas & API solution (published by Vidmizer), is a pioneer in reducing the carbon footprint of video. Video accounts for 80% of CO2 emissions from digital uses. Cutz has assembled a team of passionate, committed experts at the forefront of technology for “Tech for Good”. A Greentech label holder and signatory of the Planet Tech Care charter, Cutz boasts a dynamic team with a wide range of profiles sharing common values. Its mission over the next 3 years is to ensure that no video is broadcast before it has been reduced by a factor of 3 to 4 for the same quality.
Like Jim Skea, Co-Chairman of Group III of the IPCC, who declared last April: “We know what to do. We know what to do, we know how to do it, and now we must decide to do it”.
Together, let's make digital more responsible and sustainable.

The project

The Cutz solution makes it possible to act simultaneously on 3 levers:

  • Environmental performance: Reducing the ecological impact of videos by cutting their weight by 70% on average.
  • Operational performance**: Improved efficiency in terms of engagement and conversion, (0.1 seconds less loading time = +8% conversions according to Deloitte).
  • Economic performance**: Energy efficiency and savings on storage and bandwidth costs.

The Solution

Cutz is based on the following architecture:

  • Users communicate directly with the backend API, which is the main API docked under Kubernetes.
  • This API communicates with the database and storage to store images and videos, and also with the encoding API, which is also docked under Kubernetes.
  • The encoding API analyzes videos and creates encoding units on the fly, using a queue management system (RabbitMQ).
  • The encoding entity encodes the video retrieved from the object storage and generates the different versions with the thumbnails required to store them in the same storage.

What are the current technical challenges?

Cutz faces a number of challenges:

  • Optimizing the energy efficiency of video encoding.
  • Managing peak loads when several major customers, such as Publicis and Media Figaro, launch multiple video encodings in parallel.
  • The choice of a green by design infrastructure.
  • The ability to handle all formats and types of video content (advertising, organic videos, films, series, etc.).
  • Continuous improvement of encoding algorithms using advanced machine learning models (R&D).
  • Data management security.
  • Robust infrastructure for quality video encoding.
  • The possibility of relying on a solid, trusted partner who can advise on cloud infrastructure optimization.
